Part of the City & South London Railway’s Morden extension south from Clapham Common, Colliers Wood opened on 13 September 1926. Like its sister stations on the extension, it was designed by Charles Holden, and they were his first major project for the Underground. Frank Pick, general manager of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, chose Holden after he was dissatisfied with the designs produced by the company’s own architect, Stanley Heaps.

The modernist building is a double-height, three-sided box clad in white Portland stone, built with a shop on each side. Its front is a three-part glazed screen divided by columns whose capitals are three-dimensional versions of the Underground roundel, and a large roundel fills the central panel. The station is Grade II listed, and the pub across the road is named “The Charles Holden” in honour of its architect.
