Leslie Green designed Hampstead for the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway, which opened it on 22 June 1907. Because the station stands at the junction of Heath Street and Hampstead High Street, it was to have been called Heath Street, and the original tiled signs on the platform walls still carry that name.

The steep hill above sets the station apart. Its platforms lie 58.5 metres (192 ft) below ground level, the deepest on the London Underground, and its lift shaft, at 55 metres (180 ft), is the deepest on the network too. The high-speed lifts, originally made by Otis, were modernised by the Wadsworth Lift Company and again in 2014 by Accord. Hampstead is also the northernmost subterranean station on the Edgware branch of the Northern line. Between here and Golders Green lies North End, or Bull & Bush, a station that was never completed, while trains heading the other way run on to Belsize Park.
