At the start of the 20th century Golders Green was a small rural hamlet with only a few houses. The Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway changed that when it opened the station on 22 June 1907 as one of its two northern terminals, the other being Archway, and built its depot here too; a rapid building boom followed and the population grew sharply. Plans to push the line on to Hendon and Edgware were drawn up before the First World War, but work only began on 12 June 1922, and the first section, to Hendon Central, opened on 19 November 1923.

South of the station, in the tunnels beneath Hampstead Heath towards Hampstead, lies North End, also called Bull & Bush, a station that was partially built but never completed. Golders Green also held on to older equipment longer than anywhere else on the line: it was the last Northern line station to keep semaphore signals, which were replaced in 1950.
