Trains ran through here for more than nine years before anyone could board them. The Metropolitan’s Harrow and Uxbridge Railway began services between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Ruislip on 4 July 1904, and West Harrow station followed on 17 November 1913, at the point where the line passes over the road where The Gardens becomes Vaughan Road.

Two details make it stand out. It is the only station on the Uxbridge branch served exclusively by the Metropolitan line, with no other line calling. And it is one of the few Underground stations with an entrance that has no ticket barriers: passengers travelling towards Uxbridge can reach their platform without passing through a gate.
