When the Metropolitan Railway was extended from Willesden Green to Harrow on 2 August 1880, there were no stations at all between Neasden and Harrow. Preston Road filled part of that gap on 21 May 1908, opening on the eastern side of the Preston Road bridge as Preston Road Halt for Uxendon and Kenton, a name later shortened to Preston Road. In 1931–32 the station was re-sited on the opposite side of the bridge in two stages: the southbound platform moved on 22 November 1931 and the northbound one on 3 January 1932.

Like its neighbour Northwick Park, it is served only by ‘all stations’ trains, since northbound fast and semi-fast services do not stop between Wembley Park and Harrow-on-the-Hill. In the evening peak, passengers for Amersham or Chesham must change at Harrow-on-the-Hill.
