Opened on 13 November 1933, Northwood Hills is one of the younger stations on this stretch of the Metropolitan line. Its name came out of a competition, won by a woman from North Harrow who suggested Northwood Hills. The choice carries a small irony: the area actually lies lower than Northwood itself.

The station sits between Northwood and Pinner. Northbound, trains for Watford, Amersham and Chesham call here, although at peak times fast trains do not stop between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Moor Park.
