Metropolitan Railway trains had been running through here since 25 May 1885, when the Pinner extension opened, but North Harrow station itself did not open until 22 March 1915. It was rebuilt in 1930 to designs by Charles Clark as part of the Metropolitan Railway’s modernisation programme. Inside, the station displays artwork by former art students of Nower Hill High School, and it won Transport for London awards for best customer service in 2009 and 2010.

Of its two main exits, only the one towards the town centre has been in use in recent years. The low-lying area under the railway bridge outside used to flood at times, but this is now rare thanks to works creating a storm overflow area at the nearby Headstone Manor recreation area. At peak times, fast Metropolitan line trains run through without stopping between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Moor Park.
