Development in north Middlesex after the Metropolitan Railway’s Uxbridge line opened in 1904 brought extra stations, and Hillingdon was the last of them, opening on 10 December 1923 with Metropolitan and District services. The Piccadilly line replaced the District on 23 October 1933. From 1934 the station was called Hillingdon (Swakeleys); the suffix was gradually dropped, though it still appears on the platform roundels. The goods yard closed in August 1964.

The original building was demolished so the A40 Western Avenue could be widened at Hillingdon Circus, and its replacement opened to the south on 6 December 1992, making it the most recently constructed station on the Metropolitan line. Architects Cassidy Taggart Partnership gave it a deconstructivist design that won the 1994 Underground Station of the Year award and a 1996 Civic Trust Award, and in July 2011 it became one of the London Borough of Hillingdon’s locally listed buildings. The ticket office closed in July 2015, and in May 2016 next-train indicators were installed while the glass canopy was cleaned.
