The Metropolitan Railway opened Stanmore on 10 December 1932, with a building by its architect Charles W. Clark in the suburban style he used for the company’s post-war stations, such as those on the Watford branch. Its fast, direct trains into London took commuters from the LMS, whose rival Stanmore Village station lay about a kilometre away and relied on a slow shuttle to Harrow & Wealdstone; after 20 years of competition British Railways closed the Village station in 1952.

Stanmore might not have stayed a terminus. In 1934 and again in 1936 the London Passenger Transport Board looked at tunnelling onwards to Elstree, but the idea was left out of the New Works Programme. Instead, the branch changed hands: it went to the Bakerloo line on 20 November 1939 and to the Jubilee line on 1 May 1979, making Stanmore that line’s northern end, with Canons Park the only neighbour. A third platform, begun in 2005, was structurally complete by summer 2009 but had to wait for new signalling and only came into use in July 2011.

Frequently asked questions

In 1934 the London Passenger Transport Board’s Engineering Committee discussed extending the line north through 1.2 miles of tunnel to a station at Elstree South, with trains continuing to Bushey or Aldenham. A 1936 revision considered reaching Elstree, but neither scheme was included in the New Works Programme.
Transport for London began building a third platform in 2005. It was structurally complete by summer 2009 but could not be used until new signalling on that part of the line was commissioned, and it finally opened in July 2011, adding capacity at the Jubilee line terminus.
