Three stations called Shepherd’s Bush were once too many, and this one gave up the name. The Metropolitan Railway opened the first Shepherd’s Bush on 13 June 1864, on its new extension to Hammersmith, in the market area just south of the Uxbridge Road. From 1 October 1877 until 31 December 1906 the line also carried direct Metropolitan trains to Richmond via Hammersmith (Grove Road).

That first station closed in 1914, replaced on 1 April 1914 by two new ones: this station, resited a short distance north across the Uxbridge Road, and Goldhawk Road, about half a kilometre south. Nothing remains of the old buildings in the marketplace. For 108 years the line shared its name with the Central London Railway’s station of 1900, about 480 m away at the other end of Shepherd’s Bush Green. When a third Shepherd’s Bush opened on the West London Line in 2008, this station was renamed Shepherd’s Bush Market on 12 October 2008.

Frequently asked questions

It was called Shepherd’s Bush from 1864, alongside the Central line station of the same name. When a London Overground Shepherd’s Bush station opened in 2008, three stations shared the name, so this one became Shepherd’s Bush Market on 12 October 2008, after the market beside the railway.

Not as an interchange. The Central line station and the Overground station at Shepherd’s Bush are next to each other and interchange is allowed between them, but not with Shepherd’s Bush Market, which is about 480 m away.
