The road this station is named after is not where you might expect. Latimer Road once ran further south, close to the station, but building the Westway and its elevated roundabout demolished its central section, and the cut-off southern end was renamed as part of Freston Road. The station kept the old name, so road and station are now roughly 500 m apart on opposite sides of the Westway. Edward Latymer gave the road its name: he bequeathed land to help fund the school he founded in Hammersmith, Latymer Upper School.

The station opened on 16 December 1868 at a junction between the Hammersmith & City Railway and the West London Railway, with trains to Addison Road, now Kensington (Olympia). Those services ended in 1940 and the link was demolished; its remains can be seen from the west end of the eastbound platform. Work to lengthen the platforms for seven-car S Stock uncovered poor arches, girders and subsidence, closing the station completely from 17 January 2011 until 1 August 2011. The ticket hall sits in the viaduct arches, and the platforms keep simple open timber canopies.

Frequently asked questions

It used to be close. The construction of the Westway required the central section of Latimer Road to be demolished, and its isolated southern end near the station was renamed as part of Freston Road. The station kept its original name, leaving it about 500 m from the road and on the other side of the Westway.

Grenfell Tower, destroyed by fire on 14 June 2017 with 72 deaths, is clearly visible from the Paddington-bound platform. Announcements ask passengers not to take photos of it, mainly as a mark of respect to those affected, and also so that camera flashes do not distract train drivers watching signals.
