About Ladbroke Grove station
Ladbroke Grove has worn four names. The Hammersmith and City Railway opened it as Notting Hill on 13 June 1864; it became Notting Hill & Ladbroke Grove in 1880 and Ladbroke Grove (North Kensington) in 1919, before settling on the present name in 1938. The changes were meant to avoid confusion with Notting Hill Gate, which opened in 1868. The station takes its name from the street on which its main entrance stands.
Market traders and shopkeepers on Portobello Road have campaigned to have it renamed after their street, and the platform roundels already add “For Portobello Road” in smaller type beneath the station name. A project to install two lifts and a step-free entrance was halted in 2009 for financial reasons, after £3.06 million had been spent, with TfL pointing to step-free Wood Lane two stops away.
