The western end of the Hammersmith & City line stands on Beadon Road, in a station opened on 1 December 1868. It replaced the first terminus, slightly to the north, which the Metropolitan Railway had opened on 13 June 1864 when its extension from Paddington arrived. From 1877 the Metropolitan also ran trains to Richmond, leaving the line at a junction just north of the station and running via Hammersmith (Grove Road) and a viaduct to Ravenscourt Park over London and South Western Railway tracks. That service closed on 31 December 1906, shortly after electric trains came in, but part of the viaduct can still be seen from District and Piccadilly line trains west of their own Hammersmith station.

The Circle line has served the station since 13 December 2009. By June 2011 every platform had been lengthened for the S7 Stock, seven-car trains that replaced the six-car C Stock on the Hammersmith & City line from the beginning of July 2012. Despite the shared name, this is a separate station from the District and Piccadilly line Hammersmith, which lies across Hammersmith Broadway, so changing between them means a journey via the street.
