About Turnham Green station
The London and South Western Railway opened Turnham Green on 1 January 1869 on a new branch to Richmond, and District Railway trains followed from 1 June 1877, after the District linked its Hammersmith terminus to the L&SWR tracks. For a time passengers here could use the services of four operators, but competition wore the others down and by 1916 the District was alone. In 1879 it opened a branch from here to Ealing Broadway, and electric trains took over in 1905.
Reconstruction in the early 1930s gave the Piccadilly line express tracks between the District’s stopping lines, and Piccadilly trains have run through since 4 July 1932. From 23 June 1963 they began calling only early in the morning and late in the evening, to give an interchange with the District’s Richmond branch, and for most of the day they still pass without stopping. Plans announced in 2013 for an all-day Piccadilly stop after the line’s upgrade were suspended indefinitely for lack of funding because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The station lies near the site of the 1642 Battle of Turnham Green, fought during the First English Civil War.
