Opened on 1 July 1879 by the District Railway on its extension from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway, this station has carried three names. It began as Acton Green, after the common to its east, became Chiswick Park & Acton Green in 1887 and took its present name in 1910. The ground it stands on is the site of the Battle of Turnham Green of 1642, fought during the First English Civil War.

The building dates from a 1931–1932 rebuild by Charles Holden, carried out so that two fast tracks for the westward Piccadilly line extension could run between the District’s stopping tracks. Holden took his cue from Alfred Grenander’s Krumme Lanke station in Berlin: a tall semi-circular ticket hall of brick, reinforced concrete and clerestory glazing stands against the embankment, much as at Arnos Grove, under a flat concrete slab roof that meets the cantilevered westbound canopy. A square brick tower carrying the UNDERGROUND roundel was added so that the station could be seen from Chiswick High Road. It has been Grade II listed since 18 February 1987.

Frequently asked questions

The Piccadilly line uses the inside pair of tracks through the station, and there are no platforms on them, so its trains run straight through. Those centre tracks were fitted between the District line’s stopping tracks when Charles Holden’s station was built in 1931–1932, ready for the Piccadilly line’s western extension from Hammersmith.
It opened in 1879 as Acton Green, named after Acton Green Common next to it. In 1887 it was renamed Chiswick Park & Acton Green, and in 1910 it was given the shorter name it carries today.
Chiswick Park is served by the District line only.
