About Tower Hill station
Two earlier stations preceded the one used today. The Metropolitan Railway opened Tower of London on 25 September 1882 as the temporary terminus of a short extension from Aldgate, but it lasted only until 1884, when Mark Lane replaced it. Mark Lane kept that name until 1946, and the station moved to its present site on 5 February 1967.
Its surroundings are older than any railway. The entrance stands a few metres from one of the largest remaining segments of the Roman London Wall, and a small section of the wall is visible above the track at the far eastern end of the westbound platform, near the ceiling. In 2021 Tower Hill became the tenth Underground station where some platform roundels are swapped for poppy roundels in the weeks before Remembrance Day each year. Opposite, in Trinity Square Gardens, the Merchant Navy Memorial lists some 36,000 merchant seafarers from the two World Wars and the Falklands Campaign who have no grave but the sea, more names than any other Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial in the UK.
