The tracks here are older than the station. The London and South Western Railway opened its branch to Richmond on 1 January 1869, and a station named Shaftesbury Road followed in 1873. The District Railway linked its Hammersmith terminus to the L&SWR line on 1 June 1877 and began running through to Richmond; on 1 March 1888 the station was renamed Ravenscourt Park ahead of the nearby park opening to the public. At one point passengers could choose between trains of four operators. After an accident at Turnham Green in 1878, the platforms at Shaftesbury Road were experimentally raised from 1 ft 9 in to 2 ft 10 in above the rails.

Electric District trains ran through from 1 July 1905, and the District became the sole operator after the L&SWR withdrew its service on 3 June 1916. In the early 1930s the Piccadilly line was extended west, and Piccadilly trains began running through on 4 July 1932. Today the station sits on a viaduct with two island platforms, reached by steps only. The inner Piccadilly platforms remain usable but trains pass without stopping, except on rare occasions such as engineering works and New Year’s Eve all-night services.
