The station has changed its name several times. The District Railway opened the sub-surface platforms on 30 May 1870, built by cut and cover together with the Victoria Embankment itself, and called them Charing Cross. When the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway added deep-level platforms in 1906, at right angles beneath, it named its station Embankment. The Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway followed on 6 April 1914 with a one-stop loop under the Thames, and after spells as Charing Cross (Embankment), Charing Cross and Charing Cross Embankment, the whole complex settled on Embankment on 12 September 1976.

The 1914 loop was abandoned when the line was extended south to Waterloo and Kennington in 1926, though today’s northbound Northern line platform follows its course; the southbound platform is still the only deep-level one with no deep-level walkway to the others. On 17 May 1938 a faulty signal caused a collision east of the station that killed six passengers. Robyn Denny’s coloured lines date from the 1984–5 upgrade, the 80-year-old escalators were replaced in 2014, and the northbound Northern line platform has been the only place on the network where Oswald Laurence’s “Mind the gap” can still be heard.

The District Railway named its 1870 station Charing Cross because it was close to the South Eastern Railway’s Charing Cross station. The name stayed, with variations, until 12 September 1976, when the station became Embankment so that the merged Strand and Trafalgar Square stations could take the Charing Cross name.
