About Marble Arch station
The Central London Railway opened Marble Arch on 30 July 1900, and like the line’s other original stations it reached its platforms by lift. Its first surface building, designed by the architect Harry Bell Measures, stood on the corner of Quebec Street and Oxford Street. When the station was reconstructed for escalators in the early 1930s, that building closed and a replacement sub-surface ticket hall opened further west, coming into use on 15 August 1932; the original building was later demolished.
Plain white tiles once lined the platforms. In 1985 they were refitted with decorative vitreous enamel panels designed by Annabel Grey, and many of these were kept when the rest of the station was given new finishes in a 2010 modernisation. The main entrance now sits within the Cumberland Hotel, on the north-east side of the Marble Arch junction at the western end of Oxford Street. West of the platforms is a siding where trains from Epping, Hainault and Woodford can terminate; it is not commonly used, but is retained for emergencies and engineering works. The neighbouring stops are Bond Street and Lancaster Gate.
