The name comes from a road junction rather than a district: Stonebridge Park is where the North Circular Road meets the Harrow Road. The London and North Western Railway opened the station on 15 June 1912 as part of its New Line project, and Bakerloo trains began calling in 1917. A generating station that powered the network once stood on the site of today’s Underground depot, about 500 m to the north-west, and a carriage shed between the station and the depot was originally built for the LNWR’s DC line stock.

What passengers use now dates from 1948. After the original structures were destroyed by bombing in the Second World War, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway rebuilt the platforms to a design attributed to John Weeks, in concrete and steel rather than the brick, wood and glass of the older DC line stations; the ground-level booking hall appears to be the original. Two major fires later forced the rebuilding of the up side platform buildings and the partial demolition of those on the down side, but upgrades have kept the 1940s outline. For a spell, from 24 September 1982 to 4 June 1984, this was where northbound Bakerloo line trains terminated. Overground trains on the Lioness line also call, between Harlesden and Wembley Central.
