The first station here was Willesden, opened by the London and Birmingham Railway in 1841 and closed in 1866, when Willesden Junction, 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to the south-east, replaced it. Harlesden itself came out of the London and North Western Railway’s Watford DC line programme of new electrified suburban tracks and opened on 15 June 1912.

Bakerloo line trains began using the same tracks on 16 April 1917, reaching them through a new junction at Queen’s Park, and the Watford Junction to Euston modernisation project was completed in 1922. Today the station is shared with London Overground’s Lioness line between Watford Junction and London Euston. The southern end of Willesden Brent Sidings lies between the station and the West Coast Main Line.
