Railways reached this corner of the Lea Valley on 15 September 1840, when the Northern & Eastern Railway opened a station named simply Tottenham on its line from Stratford to Broxbourne. Until 1868 it was a railhead for cattle from East Anglia: animals were unloaded here and driven for miles down what is now the A10 towards London. The suffix ‘Hale’ was added in 1875, dropped in November 1938 and restored in 1968.

That restoration came with the Underground. Planning permission for a Victoria line station was granted on 14 July 1967, and tube trains began calling on 1 September 1968 with the line’s first stage. The site has a long accident record, the worst a derailment on 20 February 1860 that killed the driver, fireman and seven passengers, and in February 1919 the River Lea overflowed and halted trains. After the 2011 riots, which began in Tottenham, a £110 million bus and rail interchange was completed in 2014, its bus station roofed in ETFE, the material also used at the Eden Project. On the main line, the station lies 6 miles from Liverpool Street.
