About Brixton station
A tube to Brixton was proposed as early as 1897 by the City and Brixton Railway, which never raised the money to build it. The connection finally came on 23 July 1971, when the London Transport Executive opened the southern terminus of the Victoria line, one stop beyond Stockwell. Underground it is a two-track terminus with a scissors crossover to the north, and the tunnels run on a short way south of the platforms to form a pair of sidings.
A long refurbishment began in 2001, interrupted by a brief closure for asbestos removal in 2006: it gave the station a new façade and entrance lobby, lifts for step-free access (finished in 2005) and was completed in 2010. The roundel on the façade is the largest on the Underground. In the seat recesses, Hans Unger’s tile mural puns on the name with a “ton of bricks”, and since 2018 Art on the Underground has used the wall above the main staircase for temporary murals by artists including Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Shanti Panchal and Joy Labinjo.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. The Underground roundel on the façade of the station building is the largest on the London Underground network. The façade itself came with the refurbishment carried out between 2001 and 2010.
Like every Victoria line station, Brixton has a tiled mural in the seat recesses. Hans Unger’s design here is a visual pun on the name, suggesting a “ton of bricks”. Separately, the wall above the main staircase has hosted temporary murals commissioned by Art on the Underground since 2018.
