About Turnpike Lane station
Opened on 19 September 1932 on the Piccadilly line extension to Cockfosters, Turnpike Lane was the first Underground station in the Municipal Borough of Tottenham, placed where the boroughs of Tottenham, Hornsey and Wood Green met. While the extension was planned, Harringay and Ducketts Green were both considered as names and rejected.
Charles Holden designed it, and it was listed at Grade II in 1994 as a well-preserved example of London Transport’s 1930s modernist style. The ticket hall is a huge brick box, half-sunk into the ground, with two ventilation towers and high segmented windows that let daylight far inside; the booking hall is 12 feet below street level. It was conceived as a combined bus, train and tram station, and two entrances led to tram islands for the routes to Alexandra Palace: trams gave way to buses in 1938 and the islands were removed in 1968. Below ground, the tunnels are 23 ft across, as at Manor House and Wood Green, built for heavy traffic, and ‘suicide pits’ between the rails connect with passageways under the platforms.
