When the District Railway opened Sudbury Hill on 28 June 1903, on its new extension from Park Royal & Twyford Abbey to South Harrow, it was part of an experiment. That extension, together with the existing tracks back to Acton Town, became the first section of the Underground’s surface lines to run electric trains instead of steam; only the deep-level tubes of the day had been electric from the start.

Little of 1903 remains. The first building was pulled down in 1930–1931 and replaced by one from Charles Holden, ready for the branch to pass from the District to the Piccadilly line, which took over west of Ealing Common from 4 July 1932. Holden worked in a modern European idiom of brick, reinforced concrete and glass: a tall, block-like ticket hall, its brick walls broken by panels of clerestory windows and topped with a flat concrete slab, rises above a low range holding facilities and shops. The same formula appears at neighbouring Sudbury Town and at Alperton. Sudbury Hill became a Grade II listed building on 17 May 1994.
