Leslie Green designed this station for the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway, which opened it on 22 June 1907. Its exterior is clad in glazed terracotta faïence supplied by the Leeds Fireclay Company. Junction Road station on the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway stood close by, yet the two were never physically connected.

Getting to the trains still involves the original arrangement: two lifts rather than escalators, followed by stairs once passengers leave the lifts, with the southbound platform at a lower level than the northbound. Tube Lines modernised the station in 2004, renewing the communication systems, retiling it completely and fitting new ceilings. It closed between 8 June 2015 and 4 March 2016 while the lifts were replaced. The ticket office has closed permanently, leaving passenger-operated machines, and a large ventilation fan installed under the Cooling the Tube project runs all year round.
