About Mill Hill East station
Opened on 22 August 1867 as plain Mill Hill, on the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway’s line from Finsbury Park to Edgware, the station then stood in rural Middlesex; the Great Northern Railway had bought the line that July, before it opened. The route was laid out for double track, but only one track was ever laid west of Finchley Central, because the High Barnet branch, opened in April 1872, took most of the traffic. The station passed to the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923 and was given its present name on 1 March 1928.
London Transport’s Northern Heights project would have brought the whole line into the Underground. It closed for electrification on 11 September 1939, and although the war slowed the work, it continued as far as Mill Hill East to serve the nearby Inglis Barracks; Bittacy Hill was proposed as a name in 1940, and Northern line trains began on 18 May 1941. The rest of the scheme was never resumed and the planned second platform was never built, so the station remains the end of a single-track branch. Its building is one of two surviving original EH&LR stations, making it one of the oldest parts of the Underground, and it is one of the least used stations on the Northern line, behind only West Finchley.

Frequently asked questions
The line was built in 1867 for double track but only one track was laid, with doubling planned once traffic grew. When the High Barnet branch opened in 1872 it took most of the traffic, so the second track was never laid, and the planned second platform from the Northern Heights project was never built either.
The line closed for electrification on 11 September 1939. War slowed the Northern Heights project, but work continued between Finchley Central and Mill Hill East to provide a service to the nearby Inglis Barracks, and the station reopened with Northern line trains on 18 May 1941.
