Colindale opened on 18 August 1924 on what was then the Hampstead and Highgate Line, as the first station of the second section of the extension to Edgware. The platforms ran beneath Colindale Avenue, Stanley Heaps gave it a classical-style building, and its arrival spurred the development of the suburb. T. E. Lawrence used it regularly while stationed at the nearby Hendon Aerodrome.

At 8:45 pm on 25 September 1940 a large bomb hit the station while two trains carrying 400 people stood at the platforms. Thirteen people were killed; nine rescue parties worked through the night, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the next day. A plaque in the ticket hall records the event. The temporary timber building put up after the raid outlasted the original, surviving until 1962, when a new building with shops replaced it. With thousands of new homes built nearby, a £30 million new station building designed by BDP, inspired by Hendon Aerodrome, was funded; the station closed from 7 June 2024, reopened in December 2024, and its new entrance was completed on 22 December 2025.
