Opened as Clapham Road on 3 June 1900, this was one of the stations on the City and South London Railway’s extension to Clapham Common, one stop further south. It became Clapham North on 13 September 1926, when the line was carried on to Morden. Its original architect, T. P. Figgis, gave it an island platform inside the station tunnel serving both northbound and southbound trains – a layout it now shares only with Clapham Common. The platform is around 3.7 metres (12 ft) wide, and in September 2024 TfL said it had no plans to widen it because of the cost.

Above ground the building has been reworked twice. With the line’s modernisation in 1924, the ticket hall was rebuilt for escalators and Charles Holden remodelled the station, replacing Figgis’s facade with biscuit-cream faience slabs and black coping tiles on the parapet walls. Around 1996 the corner entrance block was reclad in post-modern tiles, though the lower side wings keep their 1920s elevations. Deep below, Clapham North is one of eight Underground stations with a deep-level air-raid shelter beneath it.
