A property developer created this station. Read, who was building the Upton Park housing estate, designed and constructed it, and the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway opened it in 1877 as an infill stop between Plaistow and East Ham, the first LTSR station built by a developer. District Railway trains began calling on 2 June 1902.

Electrification brought a rebuild. The District’s electric trains used a new pair of tracks from 30 September 1905, and the large Edwardian brick building over the line replaced Read’s buildings, of which no trace remains. In 1921, with 2.9 million passengers, it was the second busiest station on the LTSR. Metropolitan line trains, the service that became the Hammersmith & City line in 1990, began running here in 1936. Fenchurch Street to Southend trains stopped calling on 14 June 1962, leaving disused platforms on the south side, while canopy supports marked ‘LTSR’ from the rebuild still stand on the westbound platform.

Frequently asked questions

It was designed and built by Read, the developer of the Upton Park housing estate, and opened by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway in 1877. It was the first station on that railway to be built by a property developer. Read’s original buildings were replaced in the rebuild for District electric trains and nothing of them survives.

They served the Fenchurch Street to Southend trains, which were withdrawn on 14 June 1962 when full overhead electric services were introduced. The abandoned platforms lie to the south of the two platforms in use today.
