Stepney Green missed its own railway’s opening day. The Whitechapel and Bow Railway, built to link the District at Whitechapel with the London, Tilbury and Southend line east of Bow Road, began services on 2 June 1902, but this station was not ready until 23 June, and then only with temporary buildings. The scheme had first been floated in 1883 with the Metropolitan as partner, before reviving in 1897 with the District. Electric trains took over from steam on 20 August 1905, and full ownership passed to the London Transport Executive on 23 January 1950. Metropolitan trains arrived in 1936 to relieve an overcrowded District; that service became the Hammersmith & City line on 30 July 1990.

It is a rare, largely intact station of its period. The engineer Cuthbert Arthur Brereton designed the permanent buildings, identical at first to Mile End: brown glazed brick below the windowsills, red brick above, and terracotta around the windows and doors. Inside are white glazed bricks and a surviving “To the trains” sign with a pointing finger. The two sub-surface platforms are 450 feet long to take the longer LTSR trains, and screens on the eastbound side date from the early 1930s, when Mile End Municipal Baths were built over the steam vents. The parcel office was bombed and demolished in the Second World War.

Frequently asked questions

The platforms are 450 feet (140 m) long because they were built to take the longer trains of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway, which the Whitechapel and Bow Railway connected to the District Railway when it opened in 1902.
The 1902 buildings by Cuthbert Arthur Brereton keep their brown glazed brick lower walls, red brick above and terracotta surrounds to the windows and doors. Inside are white glazed bricks and an original “To the trains” sign with a pointing finger, making it a rare, largely intact example of its period.
