Its platforms date from 24 December 1868, when the District Railway opened its first section between South Kensington and Westminster. Over the following decades the station saw a parade of shared services: the Inner Circle run jointly with the rival Metropolitan Railway, the North London Railway’s Outer Circle from Broad Street from 1872, and the Middle Circle from Moorgate, which was cut back in 1900. The Outer Circle ended on 31 December 1908, and in 1949 the Inner Circle became the Circle line on the map.

The station has been rebuilt twice. The first reconstruction came with Electric Railway House early in the 20th century; the second, in 1927–1929, folded it into 55 Broadway, Charles Holden’s headquarters for the Underground, later the head office of Transport for London, adorned with sculpture by Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill and Henry Moore. The platforms carry the green, blue, black and white tiling Holden first used on the Morden extension. Together with 55 Broadway, the station is Grade I listed; the Palmer Street entrance and booking hall were rebuilt in the 1960s. Even the name’s punctuation has wandered, from “St. James’ Park” to “St. James Park” on Beck’s 1933 map, and “St. James’s Park” from 1951.
