Market gardens covered much of this area when the Metropolitan Railway opened Brompton (Gloucester Road) on 1 October 1868, on its extension from Paddington; for almost three months it was the line’s temporary terminus. Four platforms sat under an elliptical glazed iron roof, beside a two-storey building in cream brick with arched windows and a balustrade. The railway, and the extension of Cromwell Road that it encouraged, stimulated rapid house-building nearby. George Campbell Sherrin later redesigned the station and removed the roof, and in 1907 “Brompton” was dropped from the name.

That change matched the deep-level station opened on 15 December 1906 by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway, whose lift building by Leslie Green has the familiar ox-blood terracotta. In the 1970s one Circle line track was removed and the island platform widened, leaving the old eastbound platform disused; since 2000 it has hosted art installations, with works by David Shrigley, Chiho Aoshima and Heather Phillipson. In the 1990s a deck was built over the sub-surface platforms for shops and apartments. In 1957 Countess Teresa Lubienska was fatally stabbed on the eastbound Piccadilly platform; the murder remains unsolved. The station building is Grade II listed.
