Railways reached Stratford on 20 June 1839, when the Eastern Counties Railway opened a station on Angel Lane. The early years were improvised: the ECR laid its track to a 5 ft gauge on its engineer’s advice, then converted to standard gauge in autumn 1844, and engines working the low-level goods line, opened in 1846, needed hinged chimneys to fit under the main line bridge. New buildings were put up in 1847 in the V between the Cambridge and Colchester lines, and the station became part of the Great Eastern Railway in 1862. Repeated rebuilds followed as traffic grew, including major works in 1877 and widening to six tracks in 1891–1893.

The Underground came much later. The Central line opened its platforms on 4 December 1946, and the Jubilee line now ends here, with West Ham its only neighbour. Today Stratford is a multi-level interchange for the Underground, Overground, DLR, Elizabeth line and Greater Anglia and c2c trains, and it served as a key hub for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is the seventh busiest railway station in Britain and the busiest Underground station outside zone 1. To tell it apart from Stratford International, about 400 yards to the north, it is sometimes called Stratford Regional.
