Fairlop is an Edwardian country station that the Underground inherited almost unchanged. The Great Eastern Railway opened it on 1 May 1903 on its Woodford to Ilford branch, the Fairlop Loop, a line designed to stimulate suburban growth that had a chequered career. After the 1923 grouping it passed to the London and North Eastern Railway, and the 1935–1940 New Works Programme earmarked most of the loop for the Central line’s eastern extensions. Work began in 1938, stopped with the outbreak of war in 1939 and only resumed in 1946.

Steam services ended on 29 November 1947. Electric trains were already running through from 14 December 1947, empty, on their way to the new depot at Hainault, and Central line passenger trains to central London via Gants Hill began on 31 May 1948. Few alterations were made in the handover, and the canopies still bear the GER symbol in their bracketry.
