About Buckhurst Hill station
The railway reached Buckhurst Hill on 22 August 1856 with the Eastern Counties Railway branch from London to Loughton, and the station has kept its late Victorian character ever since. The first platforms were staggered, with the main buildings on the down side, and the 1856 station house still stands, derelict, south of the present platforms. Most of what passengers use dates from 1892, when the entrance moved to Victoria Road; the building was designed by W. N. Ashbee, chief architect of the Great Eastern Railway, and resembles his station at Billericay.
London Underground took over on 21 November 1948, when the branch was electrified as part of the 1935–1940 New Works Programme and joined the Central line. Electrification removed a level crossing: a pedestrian underpass was dug to join the two halves of Queens Road, with a pair of exits to the south leading straight into it. Those exits closed in 1982 and reopened in May 2018 to give mobility-impaired passengers a way into the station.
