Opened on 3 July 1933, South Kenton was a latecomer to the Watford DC line, and it looked it. The architect William Henry Hamlyn gave it a concrete-and-glass design with a streamlined waiting room, a clear break from the brick and woodwork stations the LNWR had built elsewhere along the route. That 1933 building still stands on the single island platform, with the ticket office at platform level in its northern end.

Passengers originally reached the platform by a footbridge that began at the foot of the embankment, a long climb that was later removed when a pedestrian tunnel replaced it. The station sits between The Link on the Sudbury Court Estate and Windermere Grove in Kenton. Two quirks set it apart: it is one of only three stations served by the Underground with no ticket gates, and the restrictive layout means none are planned in the immediate future; and Bakerloo line train doors are not level with the platform, leaving a downward step into the carriage. There is no wheelchair access. Overground trains on the Lioness line share the platform with the Underground, between Kenton and North Wembley.

Frequently asked questions

South Kenton is one of the three stations served by London Underground that have no ticket gates. Its restrictive layout, a single island platform with the ticket office squeezed into the 1933 building at platform level, is the reason, and there are no plans to install gates in the immediate future.
The 1933 station was designed by the architect William Henry Hamlyn in a modern concrete-and-glass style, including a streamlined waiting room. It contrasted with the brick and woodwork stations built by the LNWR elsewhere on the Watford DC line, and the original building still houses the ticket office.
South Kenton is served by the Bakerloo line only.
