In 1906 alone this Leslie Green station carried two names. The Baker Street & Waterloo Railway opened it on 10 March 1906 as Kennington Road, the line’s temporary southern terminus until Elephant & Castle opened on 5 August; by July it had become Westminster Bridge Road. It was renamed Lambeth (North) in April 1917 and Lambeth North in 1928. The platforms lie about 21 m below the street, reached by two lifts and a spiral staircase, and the Northern line runs beneath without stopping.

At 03:56 on 16 January 1941 a 1,800 kg “Satan” bomb struck a hostel at 92 Westminster Bridge Road. The shock wave badly damaged the southbound platform tunnel, injuring 28 people sheltering there, one of whom later died; 37 tunnel rings had to be fully replaced and trains did not run through for 95 days. A crossover just north of the station lets trains terminate at either platform, which matters for those running to and from London Road Depot. In 2017 Lambeth North was ranked the least-used Underground station in zone 1.
