Opened as plain Harrow by the London and Birmingham Railway on 20 July 1837, this is one of the oldest stations in the London region still in existence. Fields surrounded it then: Harrow on the Hill lay about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the south, and Wealdstone was a collection of houses about a mile to the north. As Wealdstone grew, the station took its present name on 1 May 1897, and a larger building went up on the Wealdstone side in 1912 next to the older Harrow-side buildings. Bakerloo line trains first called on 16 April 1917; they were withdrawn on 24 September 1982 but returned on 4 June 1984, with the station now the terminus.

On 8 October 1952 the station was the scene of the worst peacetime railway disaster in British history. A Scottish express ran into the back of a local train standing at platform 4, and seconds later a northbound express hauled by two locomotives struck the wreckage, bringing down one span of the footbridge. 112 people were killed and 340 injured. A memorial plaque above the main entrance on the eastern side marked the 50th anniversary in 2002.

Frequently asked questions

It opened in 1837 simply as Harrow, although the town was about 1.5 miles away and the station stood among fields. By the end of the 19th century Wealdstone, to the north, had grown considerably, so on 1 May 1897 the station was renamed to reflect its location more accurately.
It was the nickname for the train on the Stanmore branch, a short line opened on 18 December 1890 from Harrow & Wealdstone to Stanmore, with a halt at Belmont added in 1932. Passenger trains to Stanmore ended in 1952, and the remaining service to Belmont was withdrawn on 5 October 1964 under the Beeching Axe.
